Whether this works or not will be primarily an issue of community leadership, and enabling people to join the Ubuntu Phone effort.
I believe that many would love to have a phone with a Linux kernel and a UI that is not Android (it's X.Org or Wayland). And many are ripe to be inspired and join an effort like Ubunt Phone.

Indeed! I just purchased a Nokia N900 from eBay and I love it. It's a complete shame that Nokia abandoned Maemo/Meego/etc.
I love running real Linux on my phone and I don't think I could ever settle for anything less. I even ported my Remind tool to my phone... took about 5 minutes because it was just ./configure && make.
