SolusOS: The Consort Desktop Environment
SolusOS is a relatively new desktop
distribution, based on Debian. The project has announced
the Consort Desktop Environment, a fork of GNOME Classic. The pieces
include consort-panel (gnome-panel), Athena (nautilus), consort-session
(gnome-session-fallback), and Consortium (Metacity). "With
Consortium, we forked Metacity 2.34. Basically its been a dead project for
a while and needs some new life. Work is now underway to bring it up to
GTK3/Cairo standards so that we can improve it. Fully antialiased window
corners and plugins will be introduced, as well as extended theming.
With this new DE, we still maintain total compatibility with the GNOME
suite itself. We’re not touching core-libraries so you’ll be able to
install our desktop on most distros with GTK3, and have no issues."
The recent development release of SolusOS 2 Alpha 7 includes the young
Consort DE.

Just so long as they're not *rounded* corners!
(Though the name of the project is a little odd. I saw it and immediately *knew* it was an OpenSolaris fork. Nope.)

Yes, I thought it had something to do with Solaris as well, especially as this Gnome fork's acronym is also CDE.

How many forks of GNOME 2 do we need? The developers should understand that it's easier to merge the efforts now than later. The initial enthusiasm will go away over time. Spreading the effort between several forks will lead to wasted effort as those forks fail.

This is not a fork of Gnome 2.

It's more like Cinnamon, a fork of Gnome 3. However, in contrast to Cinnamon it doesn't use Mutter as Window Manager, but it revives Metacity and maintains the classic mode to provide a Gnome 2-like experience.
However I think they should join forces on their Nautilus forks.

It does sound a lot like Cinnamon, though I confess to not knowing the details of the Gnome world.
Are there many functional differences between Mutter and Metacity? I do hope they share lots of code and generally work together; the only way these "we don't like the Gnome 3 interface paradigm" forks are likely to last is if they work together (and I'm glad they both sound like they are keen to ensure they work with upstream libraries etc).

The answer is that we are good until we are running out of acronyms. "Consort Desktop Environment" = CDE = "Common Desktop Environment".
Oops. Maybe they have an ulterior motif.

Now all they need is to rename the Nautilus Extensions "Athena Widgets".
