Weir: Merging Lotus Symphony: Allegro moderato

Apache OpenOffice developer Rob Weir has posted a summary of the Lotus Symphony code contribution and what is being done with it. "Of course, a long list of bug fixes is impressive, but what about new features? Symphony brings those as well. A large one is a user interface addition of a 'Task Pane'. Since a Task Pane is continuously available, it can greatly improve productivity with some repetitive operations. Symphony had one version of this feature, but we're not just doing a literal copy of that UI, since grafting a UI of one application onto another is rarely successful. So we're reviewing several variations on a Task Pane design, which you can see on our wiki. Coding for this feature is ongoing in a branch."

Off-topic.. but anybody have any idea why some of the error descriptions are written in Yoda?

e.g. "To open a sample file contains chart with large data source can lead to AOO crash"

If you run AOO, error will be!

Although better than the slacker approach:

"Some field is not shown"

Maybe it follows the structure of german sentences.

German syntax is very liberal about which parts of a sentence go where. You could easily come up with a correct german sentence that has more or less the same structure as the one above, but that doesn't really mean anything as that applies to many english sentences.

It seems to me that the only issues with:

"To open a sample file contains chart with large data source can lead to AOO crash"

is choice of verb tense, and dropping of prepositions, viz:

"_Opening_ a sample file _containing_a_ chart with _a_ large data source can lead to AOO crash"

or even:

"_Opening_ a sample file _which_ contains _a_ chart with _a_ large data source can lead to AOO crash"

Which is a not uncommon thing for someone less experienced in the language in which they are writing (and dropping prepositions is common in short error summaries anyway). Perhaps the original error description came from someone for whom English was a second (or third or fourth...) language.

It doesn't seem like "Yoda" speak to me (which was a restructuring of the parts of the sentence -- object, subject, verb -- into a non-English order).

Yoda would have said
"With chart of large data source in a sample file will open, to AOO crash can lead."
Or "there is no try", since I don't think he used Symphony.

IBM did a lot of Symphony development in China at IBM Lotus China Development Labs. That could well be where the bug reports were created/triaged.

I haven't laughed so hard all week.

(and I agree with the sentiment, so nicely put)

Cool, I'm glad they wrote this up. Despite all the noise I was having trouble finding out what neat new things the Symphony code brings.

This is excellent. Improved interop with MS Office is extremely important for increasing OpenOffice usage.
