Very embarrassing that this is still such an issue on linux. I am not sure if it is a hardware problem or a software one... Have you seen this issue recently? I'm sure I read an LWN article a year or two ago where it was described how this issue was tracked down to a change in the I/O buffer window sizing or something similar (and fixed).

I had this problem fairly recently (two months ago), i suppose my kernel was already Quantal's (today it's 3.5.0-21).
