The new network names seem a bit better than the biosdevname ones. Of course, there is the annoyance of a transition, but as long as distributions make sure the change from biosdevname to this new scheme only happens on a full reinstall (for instance by not installing biosdevname by default on a new install), it will not be a problem.
The only wart seems to be that the USB interface names will change if they are moved to a different port. The rule based on the MAC address might avoid this problem, but the resulting names are very ugly.
