Regarding running DOS MIDI programs under emulation... Many of the old Atari MIDI programs are nowadays freeware. I've tested several of them under Hatari emulator and for a non-musician like me, they seem to be working fine on Linux with the emulator MIDI output directed e.g. to QSynth.
