There is an attempt here, but it's broken and unmaintained. There is another here, but it is implemented in java, lacks many extensions including RENDER, is not accelerated, and is in practice slower than VNC. Still, the latter was implemented by one guy in his spare time. If Ubuntu, for example, decided to throw some resources at it, I'm sure it could be done. If there is something else that I missed, can you point me to it?

So, I was mistaken then, sorry. Just as a quick comment: The two links point to the same project, and the last commit was 2 months ago (not what I would consider unmaintained, but maybe you know more).
