Hey, is the level of discourse on LWN getting worse? I mean in terms of politeness and investing time into your comments. Hopefully this is a symptom of LWN's subscriber base growing so that we can have more high-quality articles in the future.

I find that there are only a dozen or so heavy posters who tend to tend to instigate these digressions, putting this in your ignore list can do wonders. You always have the option of looking at comment threads by ignored users and I often do but at least you are forewarned.

what I really want is an "Ignore subthread", so when the discussion goes tangent I can just ignore everything from that point on.
Of course there's a chance that the thread goes tangent again to something interesting, but that's relatively rare.

If you ignore a user, subthreads rooted at posts by those users are also folded away and ignored (unless you unfold them).

Yah, there's some examples above of high lameness from both subscribers and guests. Meh. No need for insults, attacks, mudsligning, etc.
Can we get a pool of cash together to buy out subscriptions for folks who just can't behave? ;)
