It seems like it should be possible for Hexter to reproduce the sounds of the old OPL-3 chips on Sound Blaster / Pro / 16 / 32 cards, as well as many others. Has anyone made this happen?

Since Hexter models the DX you could at least try using it as a 4-operator FM synth. But you might have to work at it a bit to get it sounding cheesy enough. :)
