I think they should do the same thing that other systems do in this same position (like VMware) which is to register themselves as a vendor and have the device generate a random device address periodically. You'd be able to tell that the device _was_ a FreedomBox but you wouldn't be able to track _which_ one it was. If that is sufficient obfuscation; problem solved.

I think the FreedomBox people want to avoid exactly that. Giving away the FreedomBox identity is in certain places enough to draw attention.

Fair enough.
Another poster pointed out that there is a large range set aside for locally generated addresses which is widely used that the FreedomBox could safely use without giving itself away.
