That tangent misses the original point. Given a piece of software (systemd) that implements quite a few features by using Linux-specific platform functionality, I hinted at the amount of additional work required to replace even one of those features with a slightly more portable alternative. Responding to that with "do you really need that feature" misses the point completely.
