If it dies, it is because it doesn't seem matter *enough*, *at the moment*. It's easy to imagine circumstances in which one would prefer that it had not died, after it has. Avoiding the pain that would be felt at that time takes some attention today. We lack an effective mechanism to propagate that pain backward, and can only substitute thoughtful foresight.
