LVM volumes play the same role. They also make it easy to migrate from one distribution to another, without needing to repartition, and beeing able to switch back easily. Certainly, as other people have pointed out elsewhere here, you can get that by leaving an extra parition, or by resizing them later. But it is much more convenient to do with LVM, since all you need is some unallocated space.
