Parent article: The Great Package Management Experiment

Great article, but I think you forgot a couple of important aspects in your review of the ultimate package manager
First, being able to enjoy completion. All the options are suggested... so longer and more descriptive commands are OK because they're nicely completed as you type. :-D

For example, the various urpm* tools have completion mechanism for all their options. (and then some!). And the bash-completion package is now installed by default in Cooker and the upcoming Mandrake 9.2. Apt offers similar capabilities but rug, yum, up2date, swaret, etc... do not. (well not yet anyway...)

And then there are all the tools around the actual package management...
Personnaly, I think urpmi is cool because:

  • It's designed to handle your usual cd/DVD medias also with the same tool. Not everyone syncs through broadband. And for those on broadband there are various protocols available including rsync.
  • The mdk Cooker hackers have produced a range of nifty tools around urpmi:
    mdk-check-update : a rhn-applet-like for urpmi
    urpmc : a changelog tracker
urpmi-setup : the stand-alone version of easy-urpmi that allows you to update your medias without hassle. no need to edit your source list by hand if you don't want to.
I like urpmi very much (and apparently I'm not alone) but I'm eargerly waiting to see what ideas other systems can come up with. Let's improve it even further.
