I cannot honestly understand why LGPL v2.1 was chosen as the license.

for something like Motif, which ought to be used only for code archaeology or teaching, BSD/MIT/X11 (or even public domain, at this point) would be a far better choice.

Why do you think LGPL prevents use for teaching? The source is there and you can link to it without fear of catching the GPL virus. Surely it just requires any derivative to release the source so we don't get back to the same propietry state that doomed motif in the first place.
