That page says that Linus (and RMS and Donald Knuth) are ineligible, but not why.

I can understand why RMS would be ineligible -- that's like the Nobel Prize committee giving an award to Alfred Nobel -- but Linus and Don?

They already have this award.

Does the wikipedia page need updating? Doesn't mention either of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FSF_Free_Software_Awards

It does say that Knuth was a runner up in 1999.

Presumably. to become eligible for the award, Linus will have to officially rename »Linux« to »GNU/Linux«.

> but Linus and Don?

Because there's no point.

People like them have already have already been showered in flowers over and over, while thousands of others put in mountains of volunteer hours and get very little recognition.

And frankly, Linus has already gotten more than his share of accolades and credit.

(I'm nominating Christopher Montgomery again this year for his work on free video and audio formats.)
