Accessibility and the open desktop: everyone gains by it
My late father was just shy of deaf for his last few
years, and it was a great burden for the whole family. I
spent some time trying to find some sort of
speech-recognition software (preferably Free) which would
allow us to talk to him and let him read our words on a
display.
It's obviously a hard problem. Decent speech-recognition
is geared to one speaker, typically someone dictating to a
machine rather than carrying on a conversation. I couldn't
find anything which could recognize multiple speakers, even
when they spoke one at a time.
Has anything happened in the recent years to improve the
situation?
