I looked at previous winners (http://www.fsf.org/news/2011-free-software-awards-announced ) and noticed Linus Torvalds is not on the list. Is there a reason for that (political or otherwise)?

No idea who makes the decisions here but already

http://www.fsf.org/news/fs-award-2005.html

explicitely says "Previous winners of this award as well as Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, and Donald Knuth, are not eligible for nomination".

From the submissions guidelines page:

Award recipients will be chosen by a committee of previous winners and FSF president Richard Stallman.

I think Richard Stallman should get the award. That would simplify the above rule :)

makes sense

What'd be the point in giving an award to a celeb that already has a wall full?

(That's a good tactic for getting said celeb to make a public appearance at your event, but that's not the goal of FSF's award.)

That page says that Linus (and RMS and Donald Knuth) are ineligible, but not why.

I can understand why RMS would be ineligible -- that's like the Nobel Prize committee giving an award to Alfred Nobel -- but Linus and Don?

They already have this award.

Does the wikipedia page need updating? Doesn't mention either of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FSF_Free_Software_Awards

It does say that Knuth was a runner up in 1999.

Presumably. to become eligible for the award, Linus will have to officially rename »Linux« to »GNU/Linux«.

> but Linus and Don?

Because there's no point.

People like them have already have already been showered in flowers over and over, while thousands of others put in mountains of volunteer hours and get very little recognition.

And frankly, Linus has already gotten more than his share of accolades and credit.

(I'm nominating Christopher Montgomery again this year for his work on free video and audio formats.)
