...the likely decision by Debian to make Xfce4 its default desktop environment in Wheezy...

Not that likely, actually - the GNOME packages have been recompressed with xz and the installer beta 3 apparently has a useful CD#1 with GNOME.

I wonder when Debian is going to give up on install CDs completely, anyway. A USB-based install is possible on even quite old systems now..

It has been seriously considered this time, and I expect this will be the last release with CD images.

If they provide a bootloader cdrom to boot the USB do-dad then it will work on pretty much all pcs, new and old.
