Is it just me who thinks the overloading of the phrase "Unity 3D" is going to cause trouble?

You're correct, of course. The vanilla Unity is referred to ad "Unity 3d" mainly among staunch Unity 2d users to differentiate from it. I don't think the term is used anywhere else much.
