Brief items
The Free Software Foundation is looking for donations to support the
MediaGoblin project. " FSF member Chris
Webber started the GNU MediaGoblin project. He's leading a community
team to write a next-generation social web system where users will
share their experiences through photos, videos and audio, all without
running proprietary software or centralizing personal data in the
hands of a corporation. Right now MediaGoblin is partially developed, but
the team needs financial support so that they can quit their day jobs for a
year and perfect MediaGoblin's features to a professional level."

The Free Software Foundation would like your help in ending software
patents. " PersonalWeb's
software patent suit against Github and others threatens the freedom of
the Web. In order to make sure that the Web can remain a free and
accessible space for everyone, we need to rid ourselves of all the
patents that threaten its viability."

Alexandre Oliva and the FSF Latin America are campaigning for the release
of the source code for the software used by the Brazilian public
administration office in charge of federal taxes, Receita Federal do Brasil
(RFB). " Since 2008, RFB has been subject to federal regulations that
require the product of software development contracts to be published in the
Brazilian Public [Free] Software Portal, licensed under the GNU GPL.
Their contract with SERPRO (the Federal Data Processing Service), to
develop several programs that RFB publishes on its web site for
taxpayers to fill in and submit tax returns and other forms, should
comply with the obligations established in this regulation, but RFB
prefers to pretend the regulation “does not apply to these programs,
because they do not meet the requirements to be published in the
Portal,” as if their refusal to meet the requirements excused the
non-compliance with the obligations."

The European Commission Joinup blog has an open
source success story from the administration of Vieira do Minho, a
municipality in the north of Portugal. " The municipality has been using open source on its servers for years. Its database management systems is Postgres, on top of which the IT department built many Geographic Information Systems. Web, email, file and print services are all provided using the Debian open source distribution. And for telephony the municipality relies on Asterisk.
In March this year, the council decided it was time to use open source not
only for its servers but also for its desktop computers." (Thanks to
