The above has now happened. SPI resolution is at:

  http://www.spi-inc.org/corporate/resolutions/2012/2012-09...

Yesterday I've committed the change to the licensing information at:

  http://www.debian.org/logos/

the change is now live.

For the -desktop people, I've reviewed the content of the desktop-base
package, and it seems that none of the new themes uses the "debian"
label, so there should be no need to change them at all. But if you
didn't use the "debian" label for licensing reason, you still have a to
add it (to be verified with the package maintainer and release team for
unblock reasons, though). The spacefun team does use a "debian" label,
typeset in the non-official typeface, though. If you want to update it
to use the official typeface, you do have a chance to do so now (under
similar constraints than above).

Cheers.

So, the logo without the name (which was free already, licensed under the Expat license) in it is now less liberally licensed than previously? I don't really see the reason for this part of the change.

I believe the relevant quite is "We've also been advised not to relicense the "with 'Debian'" logo under a so-called "liberal" license like the Expat license." -- I guess the CC-BY-SA license is considered sufficiently equivalent? I don't see that an MIT-style license is particularly appropriate for artwork, especially since it references "Software" specifically.

I'm reminded of the time All Things Considered did a retrospective on its own themesong. Either 2002 contained the slowest news day _ever_ or that was truly epic navel gazing.

This comes close.

But then...you remember it ten years later, so it must have had some sort of impact. Perhaps, toward the end of 2022, you'll have a nostalgic moment and think about where you were the day Debian's logo relicensing was announced...

Regarding the "bottle" logo at http://www.debian.org/logos/ , called "official use logo", it's so official that very few people use it, and not many more of them known it exists at all. It hasn't been affected by the license change, but discussions are ongoing to simply set it aside https://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2012/10/msg00002.... and stop promoting it.

Ugh... that was ugly. Even worse than the traditional purple spiral, which (spoken as a long-time fan) does not really grow on you.

When the Debian website itself does not use the "official use" logo, you do have to wonder whether it has much practical purpose.

Normally, you could just head over to CafePress and request a custom shirt from them. However, I believe this would count as being "sold for profit" since presumably CafePress would charge for this service. Also, there's the question of whether something is "made by a developer" if it's actually made by someone else-- in my opinion, no.

So the only truly official debian clothing is that created by hand by a developer-- perhaps with a magic marker or a bottle of ketchup.

P.S. I have never seen the "bottle" logo before, and I used to use debian as my main linux distribution.

Heck, I've got a bottle-logo t-shirt! I don't remember the details, as it was all many years ago, but I think it may have been a limited edition only made available to DDs.

Honestly, I still like the old quick-sketch "chicken" logo. How many people remember that one? :)
