C was invented in 1972. In 1984 Knuth reported in an article about his Pascal program(PDF): I chose the name WEB partly because it was one of the few three-letter words of English that hadn’t already been applied to computers.

And he was right! At the time. If he could look twenty years forward I think he might perhaps have chosen another name, *any* other name. :)
