The Linux Foundation's Automotive Grade Linux workgroup

It was nice to hear several speakers (including GregKH) being very complimentary about Debian and Jim Zemlin saying 'we need a distro like Debian or Fedora for automotive'. Sadly the distro they deem to be most Debian-like in this context is not Debian (or Fedora), but Tizen. I guess they are somewhat biased, just like me :-) For all I know, they may be right that it forms an optimum base, but I'm not entirely convinced that multi-headed, multi-user car systems are more like 'mobile embedded stuff' than they are like 'real general-purpose linux'.

Still, a side-effect of this meeting is that the GENIVI packages which have just been made accessible to non-members have ITPs for Debian already and I expect uploads quite soon. So if anyone does just want to use Debian as a distro 'like Debian', they can.

More significantly if anyone else is interested in 'Debian Automotive' (which currently is essentially making a GENIVI-compliant system on a Debian base), then come and muck in. We're starting out on the debian-embedded list as that already has the right sort of people.
