KDE is a little better: you can parallel-install KDE3 and KDE4 on the same system and if one user only uses KDE3 applications and another uses KDE4 applications - you are golden. Not a big improvement IMO: you can do the same with GNOME using chroot-install. What you can not do (and what you really want to do) is to mix and match KDE3-based and KDe4-based applications.
