I would much prefer my car to have no IVI at all and instead just include a docking station for my phone.
My phone gets software updates and new capabilities much more quickly than auto manufactures update their products, not to mention that I upgrade my phone far more frequently than I upgrade my car.

I think that was the point of the quote :) . It's either an IVI system or a strip of velcro to stick your phone to (even without a dock to do better integration with).

The average car in the USA is 10 years old.
Offering updated infotainment systems for previous models would be an easy way to give the dealers a high-margin product to sell.
