This is where things get sticky.

the copyright maximalists want to control everything that you ever do with the program.

The principal of first sale says that after you have paid for it, you can use it any way you want.

This is why so many companies are trying to redefine your software purchase as entering a contract for a license instead.

right now they seem to be winning, but there are cracks in the facade they are putting up and hopefully things will start to crumble again.
