As can be seen by nouveau and the ARM GPU drivers clearly surpassing their closed counterparts. In particular Linux on the iPhone runs rings around iOS.

Is that really the case? I've not tried Nouveau recently, but after a quick Google search I found some recent benchmarks on Phoronix (not the greatest source...) comparing the "latest git" version against nVidia's 302.11, and occasionally Nouveau would get reasonable close (I don't think it ever was beating it), but mostly only for the older, many year old cards. For any from the last few years, the norm was for nVidia's drivers to still be several times faster.

I tried to find some info about Linux on the iPhone, but couldn't really find much useful information at all (much of it is 3+ years old). I was able to find a couple videos, but one was just of the command line, and the other looked like Unity, but didn't seem like there was any 3d acceleration being shown off. I'd imagine if someone had a working PowerVR SGX driver (for any model), that it would have made news like the Mali driver has.

Do you have any links? I'd certainly like to find news that the graphics world is doing a lot better than I think it is in Linux, but it still seems like, after many years, that things are still struggling to mature.

That makes FAR more sense! Unfortunately...

A great portion of the iPhone hardware, including the SoC, is manufactured by Samsung. The same Samsung which has Android systems that are running circles around iOS in terms of sales and performance in the phone market.

Linux-based smartphones are now enjoying a 70% market share in the world market. A stunt that was unthinkable back when Symbian phones held that position just a few years ago.
