UN Summit Tones Down Open-Source Stance (ComputerBusinessReview)

Computer Business Review Online reports that the United Nations has eliminated "Programmers Without Frontiers" and any preference for open source in the latest draft of the United Nations' World Summit on the Information Society's Plan of Action. "Language in an August draft of the WSIS Plan of Action that would have advocated the use of open-source software, particularly in developing nations, was toned down in the September 26 draft, to give equal weight to the value of proprietary software. The August draft promoted open source awareness, the creation of intellectual property mechanisms supporting open source, and the creation of a UN "Programmers Without Frontiers" body to support open source software in developing nations."

Great ideas, hopefully they can bring them back in the next draft...

Wow, I hadn't heard anything about this summit, or the August draft of their plan of action. The "Programmers Without Frontiers" project sounds like an excellent idea, one that I would have happily signed up for. Deploying open source software is an area in which I could actually make a personal difference to a developing nation, rather than simply dropping cash into a fund and hoping that it goes to the right place.

(One could possibly volunteer for projects that perform the same role as a "Programmers Without Frontiers" project, but they are 1) hard to track down and 2) lack the immediate credibility that UN backing and a familiar name would provide.)

Hopefully the open source principles and Programmers Without Frontiers concept can be brought back into the WSIS plan. At the very least they should bring back the Programmers Without Frontiers concept and let the teams that volunteer and participate in Programmers Without Frontiers develop their own principles for what makes the most sense to develop and deploy in developing nations.

Georg Greve (President of Free Software Foundation Europe) took part in WSIS meetings in July and again earlier this month. (this was also mentioned on theRegister)

The UN, in their plans to take over the world, is working on their position on software as well.

Just think how many more people per day could have been killed is Rwanda if free software had been available to the murderers. As it was they still managed to kill about 3000 per day for 100 days, totalling around 300,000 dead, mostly with machetes. Why waste precious bullets?

Communism is alive and strong. Its home is the UN.
