HP shells out for SCO road show (Register)

The Register looks forward to SCO's "road show," which begins next week. "The SCO City-to-City Tour is a nice touch to the whole IP affair. It gives the impression that SCO still has a vibrant, diverse user base that is clamoring for the latest details on SCO software. While there are plenty of SCO users out there, the need for a company-backed outreach program is quite slim. That might be why per city registration is capped off at 50 customers. Wouldn't it be funny if ambitious Linux users filled all of those spots?" The article also asks why HP has signed up as the primary sponsor for this set of events.

I registered for the one in Newark, NJ on October 8, 2003 at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel. But it seems to be missing from this page: http://ir.sco.com/calendar.cfm ??? Perhaps they heard I was going to attend and cancelled it? ;-)
I even got an email confirmation from "Michelle".

Maybe HP sponsership is another terrible mistake?

There is no need to look for sinister explanations, like The Register hints. Most likely one hand at HP does not know what the other hand is doing until too late, which is quite common in any large company!

HP in particular is probably even more prone to this than most, thanks to the turmoil caused by the recent mega-aquisition.

But this is the second time

This happened before and people ask HP to fix it before which they did. Then a month or two later the logo came back. Very strange.

HP's logo has been removed from the web page.

Presumably HP withdrew their sponsorship -- I just wish they'd made some kind of statement about it.

No, sadly that's not the case. They did in fact make a statement about it. It was reported here on LWN, and the original is was on the Register:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/61/33143.html

They are still funding it, they just don't want their name all over it for their Linux customers to see. Too bad.
