As an occasional user of an Acer Aspire One netbook I've recently found 12.04 Xubuntu to be a good compromise between usability and speed. I've run XFCE quite fast on 500MRam machines previously, though my AA1 has 1G of RAM, better than the 500M of RAM for the AA1 in this article.
