Aurora: DEFCON: Why conference harassment matters

Valerie Aurora examines the costs of harassment at technical conferences and what can be done about it. "When you say, 'Women shouldn’t go to DEFCON if they don’t like it,' you are saying that women shouldn’t have all of the opportunities that come with attending DEFCON: jobs, education, networking, book contracts, speaking opportunities – or else should be willing to undergo sexual harassment and assault to get access to them. Is that really what you believe?"

FSF: The Shield Act fails to protect free software from patents

The Free Software Foundation comments on the Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes Act, (SHIELD Act). "This act is meant to deal with the problem of patent trolls destroying software businesses. The bill would enable victims of patent trolling to have their costs covered if the judge decides that the plaintiff was not likely to succeed on their claims. While many are hailing the bill for fighting against patent trolls, it does not go far enough for us to support it, and it carries some risks that concern us." (Thanks to Davide Del Vento)

Calls for Presentations

FOSDEM calls for devroom organizers and main track speakers

FOSDEM (Free and Open Source software Developers' European Meeting) will be held February 2-3, 2013 in Brussels, Belgium. The call is out for devroom organizers and main track speakers. "The main tracks host high-quality seminars for a broad and technical audience. Every track is organized around a theme (security, kernel, collaboration, ...). They are held in the two biggest auditoria and last 50 minutes. Each of the talks is given by a speaker who gets their travel and accommodation costs reimbursed." Devroom (developer room) organizers will schedule presentations, brainstorming and hacking sessions for their room. "Each year we receive more requests than we can host. To better achieve our goals, preference will be given to *proposals involving multiple, collaborating projects*. Projects with similar goals/domains that make separate requests will be asked to co-organize a devroom under their common theme."
