This is off-topic I admit, but since you brought up mplayer, I wanted to be able to play/encode anything on my Debian box, so I did

apt-get install w32codecs mencoder-686 mplayer-fonts mplayer-686 player-doc mplayer-mozilla

I wanted to check out quicktime support so I went to http://www.apple.com/trailers/ and looked at some movie trailers. They all looked fine but sounded wwwaayyyy tooo slloooowwwww and ddeeeeepppp, like a 45 record playing at 16 (sorry, showing my age). Other things (playing oggs, etc.) sound normal. Any clues how to fix this?
