We feel your pain. And here are some good news: we are porting vzctl to be able to run on top of non-openvz kernel. That way, you won't get as good isolation and as much features as with OpenVZ kernel, but you will have basic functionality with a familiar and decent userspace tool.
The other thing is, we will provide DEB repository with our kernels so you'll be able to use it.
