Brief items
Remy van Elst has put together
a list of small
Linux systems as a sort of reference for those looking for something to
play with. "
You might have heard of the Raspberry Pi, or the Cotton
Candy, or the Snowball. Those are, besides nice pi, candy and snow, also
small Linux pc’s. Most of them have an ARM chip, a small amount of memory
and run some [form] of Linux. This page will provide an overview of what is
on the market, specs, an image, and links to the boards."

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has
announced that it is
accepting applications for Individual Membership. "
The new Individual Membership category allows individuals who support the mission and work of the OSI to join discussions about that work, to be represented in the evolving governance of the OSI, and to spin up task-focused Working Groups to tackle open source community needs. Individual Members are asked to make a tax-deductible donation to support the mission of OSI."

The H
examines
free software in handsets at the baseband processor level.
"
There are numerous hurdles that must be overcome before a practical
open source baseband firmware is a reality. Perhaps the largest of these is
concerned with gaining GSM type approval for handsets using the firmware,
without which use with public networks is probably illegal in most parts of
the world, or at least is a violation of a network's terms of service. And
it's questionable whether a handset would ever gain approval if the
baseband firmware can be modified at will."

The H has a new section on the uses of open source software on open
hardware. The first article is
about
Raspberry Pi. "
FishPi – Developer Greg Holloway is building an
unmanned, autonomous boat controlled by a Raspberry Pi. The solar powered
FishPi is being designed with the goal of being able to cross the Atlantic
Ocean all by itself. At the moment, Holloway is building a 20-inch long
proof-of-concept vehicle and he has not yet tested it for actual
seaworthiness, but the plans are to eventually produce a kit that can be
sold to interested parties. Holloway expects the finished product to be
able to sustain long-term operations and perform observations and data
logging, aided by two-way satellite communication."

Valve Software, the company behind the Steam game engine, has formed a
Linux team and the team has a new weblog. From the
first post:
"
For some time, Gabe has been
interested in the possibility of moving Steam and the Source game engine to
Linux. At the time, the company was already using Linux by supporting
Linux-based servers for Source-based games and also by maintaining several
internal servers (running a 64-bit version of Ubuntu server) for various
projects. In 2011, based on the success of those efforts and conversations
in the hallway, we decided to take the next step and form a new team. At
that time, the team only consisted of a few people whose main purpose was
investigating the possibility of moving the Steam client and Left 4 Dead 2
over to Ubuntu." There are plans to support other distributions in
the future.
