Ex-Nokia guys start mystery company to build Linux-based phones (VentureBeat)

VentureBeat covers Jolla Mobile, a six-man startup that aims to release MeeGo phones. "Jolla will soon be making announcements about its version of MeeGo as well as a brand new smartphone it’s bringing to market. The company so far is composed of “N9 core professionals and MeeGo community alumni,” the [Twitter] page reads. While N9 folks will be at the helm, there is no intention to offer support for Nokia’s N9 smartphones — more on those later."

According to their linkedin page it's not 6 guys, but 14 guys: http://www.linkedin.com/company/2649185?trk=NUS_CMPY_TWIT . They are growing fast! But most of information about their plans is in Finnish. Can anyone translate and describe in brief then they going to release something and what exactly it would be?

Maybe they already translated their Linkedin page by themself. Looking at the page you linked I can not locate any text in Finnish. If there's anything left to translate I can help you with that.

There's http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/7/3143099/jolla-meego-star..., which is a link from a link in Bergius' blog that LWN posted yesterday.

Actually, several sources and the CEO stated that they're 50 currently.

That was always MS's gamble with the Nokia play. They will get Nokia's "intellectual property" but the real value was the employees. If those employees then move to a new company where they could conceivably replace Nokia using what they already know of the market and its dynamics.

Given that the N900 (a known orphaned phone which had limited distribution) outsold the same hardware with Windows Phone loaded I think they have a pretty good chance of succeeding.

Heh. That interview seemed to boil down to "We're working on something cool, but can't talk about it right now." Well, if they can succeed in reviving the Maemo spirit, then I hope I can afford one of their phones...
