According to the latest https://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platfor..., 2.2 and above accounts for 93.9% of the Android devices which use the Android Market.

Also, when you install the Android SDK on Eclipse, it currently recommends that you target API level 8 (that is, 2.2 and above - see https://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/api-levels.html). Their new "Google Play services" API will be 2.2 and above only (see https://developers.google.com/android/google-play-service...). Google seems to be abandoning 2.1 and below.
