CentOS Project Release Times
Johnny Hughes explains
the steps the project has taken to address lagging point releases. "We now have corporate sponsors who sponsor 2 CentOS Developers to work on the CentOS Project full time. That means that we now have 80 paid hours per week of CentOS Project time where we get do nothing but CentOS Project related work. The sponsors do not ask for anything in return, just faster CentOS updates by the current CentOS developers who get to make the CentOS Project their daily work priority. This should be huge in preventing future delays."

They're still paying EDA companies for licenses, but they aren't paying Red Hat. If, instead of paying several million dollars to Red Hat, they kick in a couple of hundred K to pay for a CentOS developer or two, they save money.

I think that Red Hat could create a very cheap subscription plan for the CentOS crowd and have more costumers. They use CentOS because they want the quality and stability of RHEL but don't need the support.

Having access to security updates and the point releases of RHEL directly from Red Hat sounds good to me when you already have a team of senior sysadmins in house.
People are paying for the job of striping RHEL branding and releasing it, IMHO.

RedHat already sells "self support" licenses which only entitle you to updates. You still have to pay per system / vm.

I just went and looked at licensing for RH Self Support licenses. After getting back off the floor, I decided that throwing money at Centos looks like a good deal.

Does self support allow you to file bugs with red hat? If so, that is a solid benefit which isn't clear on their site.
