Why do they call the abomination they just enabled by default "smooth scrolling"?

I think it's more appropriate to call it "sluggish delayed scrolling".

If you want smooth scrolling, you need an high-precision scroll wheel, touchpad or touchscreen (and perhaps high refresh rate monitor), not a ridiculous delayed interpolation hack that makes the scroll function unusable.

Why is it now on by default?

That abomination started on Windows/IE years ago. It drives me crazy, I always have to turn it off. My eyes try to automatically follow the scrolling text and it feels like my eyeballs are spinning. Why copy the stupidest misfeatures from Redmond? Next release probably will support the infamous "Start Navigation.wav"...
