How will this affect Linux companies e.g. ZaReason and System76, which are dependent upon ODMs for the base configs?

Perhaps this is yet another reason to stop buying Windows PCs to run Linux.

System76 will be able to insert their own keys into the firmware prior to shipping. Nevertheless, as software can only be signed by a single key, the pragmatic approach described in the article (i.e. signing using Microsoft's key, which is virtually guaranteed to be present) will inevitably result in the likes of Ubuntu shipping using Microsoft's signature anyway.

It won't affect them at all (other than increase their share of the market of people who want PCs that are easy to install Linux on) as they have no reason to sell systems that have the Windows logo and so they can ship with secure boot disabled from the get go.

As Cathy, the founder of ZaReason, said on Twitter:

what, did you see me smiling all the way from AU? It'll make it easier for GNU/Linux-specific hardware. Sigh of happy

It's time for people like us who value our freedoms to switch where we get our hardware from.
