IMHO because the alternative would be to not have Linux booting at all if secure booting is enabled and which is likely to be the default with windows 8 provided systems.

Question is if one has more of a leg to stand on with or without the implementation. In the end i guess we end up with the age old "open source vs free(dom) software" debate.
