why are we pretending that this is a step forward, rather than a distasteful concession?

I think of it as air-dropping food to hostages who "buy" a Windows 8 computer and want to exploit "their" hardware, while others fight on the front lines, perhaps demonstrating the theatrical aspects of insecurable UEFI implementations.

But maybe that's just me.

Traditionally, many people have tried out Linux by installing it as dual-boot on a Windows PC, so this is actually quite important to the Linux community. A world where Windows 8 PCs can't easily have Linux installed will see much less growth in Linux usage, at least on PCs - and of course Windows 8 on ARM is completely locked down a la iPad.
