Google launches Chromebook, Chromebox and gets it right (GigaOm)

GigaOm reviews the new Chromebook from Samsung, along with the associated desktop "Chromebox" device. "The ChromeOS and the devices based on the OS have reached a point in maturity where they can be used as an 'optional' or second computer. It is also benefiting from the fact that most of us have become used to living and working inside the browser."

Do they even do any editing at all? Just from a cursory reading I noticed...

Multi-window support and the UI scales from seamlessly scales from 11” to 30” screens
In many ways, these new cheaper devices threaten to take away any growth prospects from Microsoft which needs to sell a lot of these devices in order to

In order to what?

They do lots of editing. It's their proofreading that leaves something to be desired. :)

Now all we need is a ChromePad, right?

Wouldn't that compete with Android tablets?

The official announcement notes that the Chromebook is built on "an open-source firmware stack". Does this mean that the laptop actually boots through Coreboot? That would be great news (and perhaps a reason to get a Chromebook). I've seen video demos of Chromebooks booting in 5 seconds (partly) because of Coreboot, but it would be great to have confirmation that you can actually buy a laptop that doesn't use a BIOS any more.

Phoronix says that Google contributed Ivy Bridge support to coreboot in April: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MT...

Yes, that is correct. The new devices use coreboot as the main firmware, and a stripped-down u-boot for portions of the verified boot functionality.

Crippled? The chromebook is one of the most open plateform (there's a dev switch to unlock the bootloader).
