Distribution quotes of the week

After 3 days of constant phone calls my brother-in-law told me about the forums and I started directing my questions there. When 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) was released I performed my first installation but I couldn’t get the sound to work. Searching the forums taught me all sorts of cool linuxy stuff like recompiling alsa and blacklisting modules even applying a patch to the kernel. In the end, it turned out that you have to plug the speakers into the green hole to hear anything.

One day, I'm going to create something called Stone Age Linux. It'll be awesome. Nobody will want to use it because it will be so uncool and so slow paced it'll make every enterprise distro look cutting edge.

Looks like the bloodbath begins. I too am in favor of killing cvs.

I think Gentoo should consider tarballs and patches. It has worked for Linus. Can't err with that.

Even funnier: many people took this as a serious post.

Is it just me that RotFL'd quite hard at the green hole thingy comment? :-D

*If yes, then LWN seriously needs more regular people as subscriber

I laughed, but only because I've experienced that story before.

Do I count as "regular"?

You're a subscriber.

So, no.

I experienced it just yesterday, with my father phoning up worried that he'd blown his new machine up because he plugged in his headphones and the speakers went dead and so did the headphones.

Fixing it took ten seconds. The headphones had been plugged into the (very hard to see) line-in jack round the back of the machine. The plug on the front prominently labelled with a pair of headphones was unoccupied... :)

At least you did not recompile ALSA.

This same story happens all the time to me with my current volume control which people accidentally lower all the time. I still have not recompiled anything either but just out of laziness.
