Revisiting RPM Package Management

SuSE's Yast does in fact check and solve(!) dependcies automatically, if it knows
where to find the missing packages. That is unfortunately not always the case, and
there lies the real strength of Debian: All additional pakackes are organized in apt
repositories, that are used to find software additionally needed.

With the ability to add "rpm-repositories" to SuSE, the situation is comparable. BUT:
there are nearly no Yast2 compatible repositories around. And that makes the
difference. So, I really enjoy to add a SuSE mirror to my list of repositories (called
"Change source of installation" in Yast2, somewhat misleading), and then I do not need
to look for my SuSE DVD just for installation of an additional rpm. If my DVD-Rom is
empty, the rpm is fetched from that mirror, including all other rpms needed.

The same worked for kde 3.1.3 as already described above. If there would be a
permanent site for SuSE-KDE rpms in a Yast repository, the situation would be very
similar to Debian (at least for kde...)

To repeat myself: The problem is neither the package manager, nor Yast, the problem
is the lack of Yast-compatibel repositories.

Cheers
