Parent article: Announcing printerd
I got a new printer this weekend, and after spending several hours wrestling with CUPS, was thinking that it was about time for someone to come up with a "*d" replacement.
Unfortunately, they're still using the CUPS backends, which are the part I'm having the most problems with. You'd think that printing to a networked Postscript printer would be a walk in the park, but it's turned out to be an ordeal. It's frustrating trying to debug, because one small problem means that your printer suddenly starts spewing ten pages of unrendered PDF before you run over and shut it off for the umpteenth time. I'm still working on trying to figure out the actual problem enough to report a bug, though...
