I have around 200ms of delay over 17 hops (including the Atlantic Ocean
hop). My ping between US coasts is 55ms over 9 hops.

So 5ms per hop looks just in the right ballpark for a typical delay.

100 or 200 ms doesn't sound too large because diameter of earth is 3474 km while light speed is 300000 km/s, so best time you can get for half of earth in straight direction is 6ms =)

I've always seen about a 200ms delay around the world, that have never been a place I have seen issues. The main issues comes that I've seen alot of dsl providers that have 50ms for the first hop, which is quite annoying.
