I think "nerd fatalism" has another component: the realization that while you *could* do something to solve the problem, you'd have to give up on doing anything *else* with your life in order to have an impact.

And I thought it was also the nerd's reaction in the moment all the shiny application software gets brittle when the underlying library's major number changes. Oh well...

I can respect Doctorow's position because many of his geeks don't even know about really geeky things, like, gene transcription and translation, purine biosynthesis and enzymatic activity. Which matters much more when you get old.
