The problem isn't confined just to Linux Desktops.

Here in my midsize town, the local soccer club fields travel teams that have to play against teams from significantly larger communities. Unfortunately, our teams are often at a significant disadvantage in that the other teams just seem to have better athletes, to put it bluntly.

I've concluded that we could field competitive teams if it were not for the fact that many of the best athletes are drawn away by other sports, particularly lacrosse, which is quite popular in this town. If lacrosse were removed as an option, I'm confident many of those players would take up soccer, and our teams would match up against the "big boys".

So I would fully support some kind of "benevolent dictator", who would determine what is the "best" sport for the community to support, as long as that dictator agreed with me.
