SuSE Linux Professional 8.2 Review (Linux Journal)
[Posted September 17, 2003 by corbet]
The Linux Journal reviews SuSE Linux Professional 8.2. "YaST 2, SuSE's second-generation setup tool, is a total dream. (Keep in mind this is a Debian fan talking here.) The software installer looks very much like the install screen and shows you which CDs you need to use and for how long; I imagine it's much of the same code. The system tool lets you do everything from edit /etc/sysconfig files to back up the system. The firewall tool, under Security, allows for some fairly advanced configuration, including DMZ and IP masquerade, right there under the GUI."

First, I agree with the sentiments - SuSE is a great, easy to install distribution. I use it daily, having long since abandoned windows (against corporate policy but I haven't been hit with virus, worm and trojan attacks.....).
My only question is : why did it take you so long? 8.2 has been out for a long time now, and 9.0 is in beta for release November-ish.

I have to agree that suse's config tools are very good. But the stability and correctness of the code leave something to be desired.
A friend of mine uses SuSE 8.2 on her laptop and experienced incomprehensible crashes after an average of 10 minutes use.
And I found a bug in the prerelease GCC that's shipped with SuSE 8.2. It's not in the final gcc 3.3, fortunately, but it did force me to upgrade since the generated code was affecting my binaries. (numbers were rounded when they shouldn't be).
With the first problem, SuSE was helpful in trying to find the cause, but the problem was not resolved. In the second case, no action was taken and I switched to Knoppix/Debian.
Nevertheless, I think that SuSE is one of the best polished distros.

There is still no update for OpenSSL on any SuSE version (as I write)..
Could it be that SuSE is this slow on all "critical" updates ??
